Rob Spaulding

Rob grew up in a household that cherished music and was captivated by his Dad's piano playing at an early age. He began formal piano lessons in the third grade with the neighborhood piano teacher, Edith Sloane, a woman of great skill and patience, to whom he remains indebted. He devoted more time to athletic endeavors during high school, but still nurtured his love of piano, playing keyboards in a rock band as an undergrad at Hobart College. After college, an evolving teaching career and an emerging passion for running rendered his piano playing dormant until well into his thirties. During this time he also obtained a Master's degree from Harvard Divinity School.

It wasn't until 1992 that he began to explore jazz, at first studying in Portland with the talented area pianist, David Libby (now based in New York), who introduced him to the fundamentals of jazz harmony. Equipped with some jazz basics, Rob began working local gigs into his schedule. Having left teaching, he spent three years as a college and high school cross-country coach while running a property management business by day.

In 1998, Rob decided to pursue his burgeoning passion for jazz full-time. He recorded and released a solo piano CD, First Dance. The following year he completed a full year of study in Boston with the master of jazz improvisation, Dave Frank, whose techniques and approach are thoroughly grounded in the tradition of jazz. He studied more recently with the acclaimed Boston jazz pianist, Bert Seager. From 1998 - 2002, Rob taught piano at the Tony Boffa School of Contemporary Music located in Westbrook, Maine and subsequently taught for 6 years at River Tree Center for the Arts, located in Kennebunk.

Rob has appeared as a solo pianist at several Maine establishments (Stripers Restaurant, Pier 77 Restaurant, Black Point Inn, Colony Hotel) in addition to performing frequently in Duo and Trio formats for private events.

He resides in Kennebunk with his wife, Penny, and their one-eyed beagle, Maggie, who can really howl on the blues.
